In 2021 I did a wheel upgrade installing O-Z Racing Rally Raid 17 x 8 inch rims.
At the time I wanted a larger tyre but needed to use up the rubber that came with the van.
After just over 50,000 kms my original tyres were starting to literally fall apart and very noisy – as well as being uncomfortable.
I chose to go up one size from the standard size fitted – 215 60 R17 107/109 load rating.
The options were very limited from a load rating perspective as I wanted to go higher than 104 so went with the only option available to me – Falken Wild Peak A/T Trail 225 65 R 17 106H.
Ordered them from my local Bob Jane and had them fitted the next business day.
Fitting was a disaster.
They stripped the bolt to hold the spare under the car – but also advised me that the tyre would not fit under the vehicle so left me with the spare tyre in the camper.
I had advised them to adjust the holder for the spare for the larger tyre but struggled to communicate this requirement to them.
I ended up having to pay for a local engineer Danny from Prothreads who rescued me – I can highly recommend contact him in Brisbane/Gold Coast. He rethreaded the mounting bolt and helped me fit the spare.
I can confirm that the 225 65 R 17 tyre will fit on a 17 by 8 inch RIM under a VW T6.1.
The comfort level has improved markedly as well but the steering is not quite as direct now.
