The Roman Mosaic at Constanta in Romania is definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.

We were based in Bucharest for five nights and set aside a day to visit Constanta on the Black Sea, the eastern most point of our holiday in 2025.

Staying near the Old Town we caught an Uber before 7 am for our 7:40 departure from Bucaresti Nord to Constanta.

We grabbed breakfast at the station and were very pleased with the very modern and comfortable train that got us to Constanta in just over two hours.

On arrival we got some guidance from a bus driver and caught the 101 bus to the port near the Casino. We bought return paper tickets from the booth near the buses and were at the sea side the within 15 minutes.

It was quite a cold day and very grey.

We walked up the hill from the bus stop to see the exposed Roman walls near the Orthodox Church where a service was underway and audible to those outside. It was incredible to see the Roman ruins just outside the church.

Took some pics and then wandered down to the ocean wall, past the casino which is a grand building right on the water.

We then walked north around the old harbour, took some photos on the sandy beach and then walked up the path to the old town.

The Roman complex was built in the fourth century AD on the high cliff of Tomis (now Constanta).

It comprised three levels down to the ancient harbour.

On the first terrace there was a 2,000 square metre rectangular hall with a monochrome mosaic floor and marble wall cladding.

It was used for large gatherings and was in use until the sixth century when it was devastated by an earthquake.

It was discovered in 1959 and researched until 1967.

Around 400 square metres of mosaic a protective building.
